"Civilization Is A Veneer"

“A camp is a negative school of life. No one ever gets anything worthwhile out of it….A man becomes less, not more.” -Varlam Shalamov-
During his imprisonment in Soviet prison camps, Varlam Shalamov saw how quickly human dignity collapses under hunger, cold, and violence. He saw how heavy labor, starvation, and beatings reduced prisoners to animalistic survival. He witnessed moral vanish as theft, betrayal, and indifference became normal. The grim lesson of Shalamov’s experience was that “civilization is a veneer” and once its protections are removed brutality takes over.
