"It was a lovely night...bright and starry.."

The novel White Nights is set in St Petersburg in the mid-1800s. The novel’s main themes—dreams, solitude, introspection and love—are communicated from the point of view of a young man, who has no friends or family, living in a world of unrealized dreams and thoughts. Today’s passage finds the protagonist wander, as usual, alone on the streets of St. Petersburg.

White Nights

“It was a lovely night, one of those nights, dear reader, which can only happen when you are young. The sky was so bright and starry that when you looked at it the first question that came into your mind was whether it was really possibly that all sorts of bad-tempered and unstable people could live under such a glorious sky.”
