Persian Letters

Letter 36

"Coffee is very popular in Paris; it is distributed in a large number of houses open to the public. In some of them people tell each other the news; in others they play chess. There is one where the coffee is prepared in such a way that it sharpens the wits of those who drink it; ....there is nobody among them who, as he leaves, does not think that he is four times cleverer than when he went in."
